Facts About SEIU and Local 721

Facts about “USC Faculty Union”

The labor organization seeking to become the exclusive collective bargaining representative of Dornsife teaching-track faculty, whose name will appear on the NLRB ballot, is actually “Service Employees International Union, Local 721.”

Facts about SEIU Local 721

SEIU Local 721 has 55,000 members. The SEIU 721 website says it represents “the county and city employees across Southern California, including Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties and numerous cities in the region, as well as employees of special districts and publicly-funded non-profits such as health clinics.

“Our members care for the sick, protect the quality of the drinking water, keep records in the courts, administer benefits for poor people, maintain the libraries, help run the jails, protect our communities’ most vulnerable members, maintain the streets, work with parolees, groom and maintain the beaches, and provide many other services to keep counties and cities running. “

Local 721’s president is Bob Schoonover. “Schoonover, a Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic for the City of Los Angeles, has served as a steward, a trustee, vice-president and president of Local 347″ and as a Local 721 officer for more than three decades.

Facts about the Service Employees International Union

When SEIU organizers came to USC, the SEIU International website said they focus on three sectors:

* Healthcare (“nurses, LPNs, doctors, lab technicians, nursing home workers, and home care workers”),
* Property services, (“building cleaning and security industries, including janitors, security officers, superintendents, maintenance workers, window cleaners, and doormen and women”), and
* Public services (“local and state government workers, public school employees, bus drivers, and child care providers”).

The SEIU International website includes initiatives for janitors, child care workers, home care workers, private security workers, airport workers, and college faculty.

The SEIU and the Teamsters left the AFL-CIO to create an organization called “Change to Win,” whose chair is James P. Hoffa, Teamsters president.

Facts about SEIU at USC

Service Employees International Union currently represents janitors who are employed on campus by our custodial services contractor. It also represents certain “non-professional service employees” at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital.

At one time, the SEIU represented a bargaining unit of clerical employees and medical technicians at our Keck Hospital. In 2010, however, those employees voted the SEIU out and replaced it with a rival union.

USC continues to engage in good faith bargaining with the SEIU concerning the teachers of non-credit EFL courses at the International Academy, following a unionization vote at the beginning of 2016.
